Unity and Technology: A Cooperative’s Blueprint for Golden Harvests in Banaybanay
Banaybanay, Davao Oriental — In the vast cornfields of Banaybanay, a green revolution is taking root, driven not by a single farmer but by the collective power of the Davao Oriental Sustainable Corn Growers Cooperative (DOSCGC).
“We realized early on that as individual farmers, we were vulnerable,” says Lito, DOSCGC president. “We couldn’t afford expensive machinery, and we always got the short end of the stick with middlemen.” In 2024, 50 local farmers came together to form the cooperative.
The breakthrough arrived in 2026, when DOSCGC, through DA funding, acquired a high-capacity mechanical corn dryer and a spacious warehouse. “Before, we would spread our corn on the highway to dry,” remembers cooperative member Sarah. “If it rained, we lost half our crop. Now, we dry and store our harvest in a few hours, maintaining top quality.”
Equipped with the new facility, DOSCGC’s members wear matching green t-shirts and hard hats, moving with a synchronized purpose. Lito, holding a moisture meter, gestures toward a mountain of processed corn kernels. “We can now aggregate our produce and negotiate directly with major feed mills,” he says proudly. “The cooperative ensures fair prices for every member.”
The cooperative’s success has had a cascading effect on the community. It has created local jobs, improved food security, and fostered a sense of shared responsibility. Under a clear blue sky, the massive, modern corn dryer stands as a monument to what can be achieved through unity and technology, providing a scalable blueprint for sustainable agricultural development across Davao Oriental.
