Mati, Davao Oriental — While many of his peers were looking for city jobs after graduation, 22-year-old Joshua Lim returned to his family’s multi-crop farm in Mati with a degree in Information Technology and a radical vision. He is part of a new generation of “agripreneurs” who see soil not just as dirt, but as data.

“People think farming is just backbreaking work in the sun,” Joshua says, adjusting a sensor module in his automated greenhouse. “It is hard work, but it can be smart work. My goal is to blend technology with traditional farming to increase efficiency and make agriculture appealing to youth again.”

Joshua transformed a portion of his family’s land into a pilot “smart farm.” He developed a customized, low-cost micro-controller system that monitors soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels in real-time. The data is sent directly to his smartphone, allowing him to precisely manage irrigation and fertilization schedules.

“We used to waste water and nutrients by guessing,” he explains. “Now, we provide exactly what the plants need, when they need it. Our yield has increased by 40%, and resource waste is down significantly.”

His farm, which produces high-value leafy greens and cherry tomatoes, also utilizes vertical farming techniques to maximize space. Joshua uses social media not just to market his produce directly to consumers, but also to document his journey, inspiring thousands of young followers to reconsider agriculture as a viable career.

As dusk settles over his illuminated greenhouse, Joshua Lim stands as a symbol of agricultural evolution. His story proves that innovation doesn’t always come from the outside; sometimes, it grows right from the soil, nurtured by the vision of a young entrepreneur determined to code a new, sustainable future for farming in Davao Oriental.
