The Sweet Taste of Modernization: How One Cacao Farmer is Turning Pods into Prosperity

F1

San Isidro, Davao Oriental — For decades, Maria Flores viewed her small cacao farm as a humble source of subsistence. However, a recent shift in perspective and the embrace of modern agricultural techniques have transformed her 1.5-hectare plot into a thriving enterprise, offering a sweet glimpse into the potential of Davao Oriental’s cacao industry.

“It used to be a gamble,” Maria recalls, running a hand through a cluster of dark, ripe cacao pods. “We relied entirely on traditional methods, which were unpredictable. The beans were inconsistent, and the market was always unstable.”

The turning point came when Maria attended a series of Department of Agriculture (DA) workshops focused on sustainable cacao production and fermentation. “They taught us about soil health, pest management, and the crucial final stages of processing,” she explains. “Simple changes, like using solar dryers instead of open-air drying, made a massive difference in quality.”

Today, Maria produces premium fermented cacao beans, sought after by artisanal chocolatiers. Her farm features a neatly organized fermentation area and a solar bubble dryer, ensuring consistent texture and flavor. The financial benefits are evident. “I’m earning nearly double what I used to,” she says with a smile. “But more than that, I feel a sense of pride. We’re not just growing cacao; we’re contributing to a better, more sustainable future.”

Maria’s story is a testament to the power of knowledge and modernization. Her small farm, now illuminated by the golden light of progress, stands as a beacon for other smallholder farmers, proving that dedication and the right support can transform agricultural dreams into thriving, sustainable realities.
